Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth, technically known as the third molars, are the last teeth to appear in the mouth. They usually make their debut between ages 17 and 25. For some, these late arrivals fit right in, but for many, they cause discomfort, crowding, or other dental issues. That’s why wisdom teeth removal is such a common procedure — over five million are extracted every year in the United States alone! At Lakeside Dental in Folsom, our team is here to make the process smooth and stress-free, helping you protect your smile and oral health with expert care.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth require extraction if they:

  • Erupt crooked or sideways, damaging nearby teeth or bone.
  • Lack enough jaw space, causing significant overcrowding.
  • Partially emerge, increasing the risk of jaw infection.
  • Form cysts in the jawbone, leading to infection or tissue damage.

If our dentist identifies any of these concerns following x-rays and an exam, then wisdom tooth extraction may be recommended. Our team will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure so that you are comfortable with this course of action.

The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

If removal is required, our experienced dentist or oral surgeon performs the procedure. Local anesthesia is often sufficient for single or double tooth extractions, when the wisdom teeth are visible. General anesthesia is recommended when multiple extractions or more extensive oral surgery procedures are necessary. For impacted wisdom teeth, the gum tissue is opened, and the tooth is carefully removed from the jawbone. The area is then sutured for proper healing. Afterward, patients rest in our office before heading home. If general anesthesia was used, a ride home is recommended.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery and Aftercare

For most of our patients, healing takes just a few days. To manage discomfort and promote recovery, we recommend the following:

  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity. This prevents major bleeding.
  • Use prescribed pain relievers as directed.
  • Expect minor bleeding; use gauze pads to absorb the blood.
  • Keep the head elevated to reduce bleeding.
  • Apply an ice pack to the cheek to minimize swelling.
  • Rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean and reduce discomfort.
  • Stick to soft foods until healing is complete.

Our dentist provides detailed post-op care instructions to ensure a successful recovery. Stiffness in the jaw or neck muscles is common and should not be a cause for concern.
