Orthodontic Injury

What to Know and When to Act

There is no doubt that orthodontic appliances such as braces, retainers, and other devices improve smiles and tooth alignment. Occasionally, orthodontic challenges or injuries arise due to accidents or equipment failure. Some situations can be cared for at home until an office visit can be scheduled, while others require immediate attention.

Common Orthodontic Injuries

Here are some of the most common orthodontic injuries that typically don’t require emergency treatment.

  1. Loose Brackets, Bands, or Wires – Brackets occasionally detach from teeth and bands or wires break. If no pain or bleeding occurs, cover the area with orthodontic wax and schedule a repair during our normal office hours.
  2. Broken Appliances – Appliances such as retainers and palate expanders become dislodged or crack, warp or loosen over time. If you experience no pain, then discontinue the use of the broken appliance and schedule an office visit as soon as possible.
  3. Poking Wires – At times wires shift or extend past brackets, irritating the cheeks or gums. The use of orthodontic wax reduces discomfort that you may be having. Contact our office for an adjustment.
  4. Soreness or Irritation – Most orthodontic treatments shift teeth, causing mild soreness. In the early stages of braces, the brackets, bands, and wires rub against cheeks or lips causing irritation. All of this is to be expected. Eating softer foods, using warm saltwater rinses, applying orthodontic wax, and taking OTC pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen makes the discomfort more bearable. Be sure to contact our office if these strategies are not improving your situation.

Lakeside Dental wants to ensure your best possible experience during orthodontic care. Most patients experience mild discomfort at times throughout their treatment plan. If your pain level increases beyond what is normal or is difficult to manage, please contact our office to schedule a visit. We are here to help you!

Emergency Orthodontic Situations

Severe orthodontic injuries that require immediate attention are as follows:

  1. Trauma to the Face or Mouth – Direct impact to the mouth often causes injury to the teeth, gums, or jaw. After addressing urgent needs such as bleeding, contact our office immediately.
  2. Swelling, Infection, or Bleeding – Signs of infection include swelling, bleeding, or pus near appliances. It is important to begin treatment for infections early to avoid the risk of the infection spreading and creating complications in other areas of the body. Request an emergency appointment so that we identify the underlying reason and take the necessary steps to stop the infection.
  3. Broken Appliances Causing Extreme Pain – Broken appliances become an emergency situation when they puncture tissue, restrict mouth movement, or are extremely painful. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater, apply gentle pressure to the area that may be bleeding, apply ice is possible, and contact our office for urgent attention.

In emergency situations it is important to stay calm, address your immediate care needs, and contact our office for further instruction. The Lakeside Dental team has the necessary experience and dedication to help you through all dental emergencies.

I recently visited Dr. Simran’s dental office for a routine cleaning, and I can’t say enough about how wonderful the experience was. From the moment I walked in, the entire staff made me feel welcomed and at ease. The front desk team was warm, professional, and incredibly helpful, ensuring all my paperwork and questions were handled with care and efficiency. Dr. Simran was an absolute delight. She was kind, attentive, and took the time to explain every step of the process, which made me feel completely comfortable. The dental cleaning itself was seamless—painless, thorough, and done with such precision. I could tell Dr. Simran genuinely cares about her patients’ well-being, and her expertise shone through in every aspect of the visit. The rest of the staff was equally impressive. The hygienist was gentle yet meticulous, and everyone I interacted with radiated positivity and professionalism. It’s rare to leave a dental appointment feeling so uplifted, but this team made it happen. I’m already looking forward to my next visit! Highly recommend Dr. Simran and her amazing team to anyone seeking top-notch dental care.
