How to Choose the Right Dental Insurance Plan in California

How Can You Decide?

Managing the cost of routine dental visits and unexpected dental treatments is easier when you have dental insurance. Some of our patients, unfortunately, find deciding on dental insurance options overwhelming, whether through an employer or purchased individually. This article helps you make a decision by comparing the four main types of dental plans offered in California. We hope it helps!

Types of Dental Insurance Plans

Dental PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)

PPO plans offer flexibility. You receive lower rates with in-network dentists and partial coverage if you go out of network. These plans work well if you want more of a choice in providers, but you pay for that convenience with a higher premium than other plans.

Dental HMO/DMO (Dental Maintenance Organization)

Also called DHMOs or DMOs, these plans focus on affordability. You choose a primary dentist, and they must refer you to an in-network specialist if necessary. The advantage of this type of plan is that you know exactly what you will spend each month; however, the selection of providers is much more limited than in other plans.

Indemnity (Fee-for-Service) Plans

Indemnity plans allow you to visit any licensed dentist. Each time you see a dentist, you file a claim with the insurance company, and then they pay a predetermined portion of that bill. Premiums and out-of-pocket costs run higher with this plan, but you gain maximum freedom in choosing your care.

Discount Dental Plans

These are not dental insurance plans. With discount dental plans, you simply pay an annual membership fee to receive discounted prices from participating dentists. There are no claims forms to fill out or reimbursement checks issued; you just receive a discount at the time of service.

EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization)

EPO plans combine elements of PPOs and HMOs. You must see providers only in the network to receive coverage, but premiums remain lower. This option suits patients who want structured savings from using a defined group of providers.

Choose the Right Dental Plan

Each dental plan has its own unique structure of costs and provider networks. To choose carefully, compare monthly premiums, deductibles, and coverage limits. Consider your immediate and future dental needs. For example, a family with tween or teen children may prioritize orthodontic coverage. Adults may focus on preventive care. Your ideal plan should meet your financial situation and your desired level of oral health. For example, if you know you need significant dental work in the near future, a plan with larger coverage limits is likely your best option.

Got all four of my wisdom teeth out in under 30 minutes of being in the chair. Very professional and clearly highly skilled at what they do.

This is Maria, and I'm using my husband's Google account for this review. As a new patient, I was impressed on their great customer service. I wanted to verify first that they accept my insurance before I made an appointment. The lady that I talked to asked me to text her a copy of my insurance to check and she will call me back. She got back to me so quickly and said that they accept my insurance. I was pleased with her effort of doing that so I made my first appointment. They have excellent communication skills via text/phone and especially in person. The staff from the front desk are very welcoming, friendly, helpful, and professional. My nervousness is gone as soon as I talked to them. As for the dentist, Dr. Cheema made me feel comfortable right away. He is cheerful, professional, knowledgeable, and he explained everything clearly what treatment I need to be done. After 2 days, he did my treatment and everything went well. His dental assistant is very nice and friendly as well. Overall, I am happy and thankful that I found Lakeside Dental in Folsom. The great reviews I read about them were true, and that's why I gave them another great review. I highly recommend this dental office to everyone looking for one.
